The Problem

FIRST robotics competition is an organization committed to just what it stands for: For the inspiration and recognition of science and technology. First has thousands of teams who compete in dozens of regionals across the nation. My school, Tacoma School of the Arts High School's team the SOTAbots, or FRC team number 2557, is a rather large team. And we Won the Seattle regional contest. Now we all need funds to send ourselves to Atlanta for nationals. Our team, as part of the FIRST organization, helps educated students on the importance of engineering, technology, Public Relations, Math, and Science by building robots to program and drive. It gives hundreds of thousands of kids around the world a safe place to feel involved at school, and a passion that could lead to a career. Our team also annually goes into local middle schools educating students on the importance of technology and the careers open to them, and how to get involved with a FIRST robotics team in high school. We need to change the culture that is so oriented towards sports and arts. We need people to see the skill and time students put in educating themselves on technology and science. And the students on the team need money to send ourselves to Atlanta for the FIRST robotics competition nationals.

Plan of Action

Continue with the student led club. We need to continue visiting and educating middle school students, and students of FRC team 2557, the SOTAbots, need to feel proud of themselves for all the work they have done. There are so many opportunities through FIRST, such as scholarships, and so many will be available to a winning team who went to nationals. Give students a safe place to feel welcome at, and educate high school students about careers in the technology field.
