See It

When children are admitted into a hospital they experience numerous amounts of emotions including fear, anger, abandonment, rejection, resentment, loneliness, embarassment, and guilt. Take Good Care Back Packs is a support program I am developing with the Child Life Specialists at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Take Good Care Back Packs will be given to pediatric patients when they are first admitted into the hospital in hopes that the backpacks will provide the children with fun activities that will keep their minds off of their unfortunate situation. The backpacks will include different items for different ages of patients. For example, in a back pack meant for a 10 year old there would be a beanie baby, a yo-yo, a coloring journal which will narrate the child's stay at the hospital, crayons, plain paper, a hackie sack, playdoh, stickers, bubbles and many other fun activites. For an older patient there may be a small stress ball, relaxation tapes, and books. However, in every backpack there will be a pamphlet of information about the patient's illness. At Sinai hospital there is already a binder including information about every illness and resources that give more details. When a child is admitted and receives a backpack, the child life specialist at Sinai would copy the information in the binder and put it into the backpack for the patient. Also in the back pack will be small necessities for parents such as gum, tissues, a pad of note paper and a pen, and a small inspirational book. My goal is to raise the money to create 50 backpacks by May 1, 2008.
