Some kids in the Dorchester neighborhood of Boston have nothing to do when they're out of school and idleness at times breeds trouble. I have been volunteering at the youth program of a not-for-profit in Dorchester to upgrade the youth computer center so that it is a viable alternative to the streets for neighborhood kids. We've gotten the kids engaged with computers by mentored them in web design, we have obtained non-violent games for the youth center computers though the generosity of Electronic Arts, and now are organizing a computer literacy and give away project for the kdis in the agency's summer program. Four lucky youth will win a computer for their home at the end of the summer program. The glitch - they have to take apart the computer and put it back together before taking it home. We've identified a company that will contribute four lightly used computers for the computer literacy and computer give-away project. We have identified mentors (have 2 need 2) to work with the kids one on one in the computer take apart and rebuild project, which will include the development of educational materials about computers (what's what and what does what inside the computer). We are looking to raise a total of $1,000 to pay for software since the computers' hard drives will be wiped clean when they are given to us. We will need a Windows system and Microsoft package for each computer x 4. Thank you.
