The Problem
Erase the stigma associated with depression and other mental health issues to prevent suicide. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among college students. A Talk Out Loud campaign will encourage college students to Talk Out Loud and not remain silent about their emotional pain.
Plan of Action
Create a Talk Out Loud non-profit organization and implement the program on college campuses with:
· Organized student action teams at each campus to recruit team captains and team members to implement awareness campaigns peer support.
· An educational video featuring vignettes of college students who are survivors of a suicide or survivors of suicide attempts to put a real-life face to the issue and to reach out to our peers. This video could be incorporated into freshman and new student orientation, and can be made available through the campus Counseling Center for awareness programs that focus on mental health issues, such as Mental Health Month (May-Mental Health America), National Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month (September-SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health …..Mental Illness Awareness Week (October-NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), World Mental Health Day (October-World Federation for Mental Health), National Suicide Prevention Week (Sept 2-8-American Association of Suicidology), Suicide Prevention Day (Sept 10-World Health Organization), National Survivors of Suicide Day (November 19-AFSP),
· PSAs on college campus TV and local TV/radio/print media
· Stickers
· Buttons
