The Problem

When people in the US buy a new computer, frequently their old one gets put into storage. This is a waste of perfectly good technology. Our goal is to “recycle” these computers by placing them in the hands of students who have a need for them, but otherwise wouldn’t be able to obtain them. Additionally, for only $60-$70, school fees for a student can be paid for an entire year. Unfortunately in Tanzania this is quite a large sum of money, and accordingly many families have difficulty paying every year. Attending school is essential to success for young Tanzanians. In addition to providing a foundation that may lead to higher education and a skill set for potential financial independence, attending school keeps young Tanzanians healthier by decreasing rates of teenage pregnancy, HIV transmission, and use of sex as a commodity – sometimes even to pay school fees.

Plan of Action

Contact friends, family, community organizations, companies – anyone and everyone- and ask if they would donate spare laptops and/or invest in a young person’s education. This coming summer our group is organizing a trip to Tanzania to hand deliver the computers. We are potentially networking with a non-profit organization that operates in Tanzania to have volunteers courier laptops on a more regular basis.
