The Problem

Lately I have been working on a project to reduce euthanasia in shelters, by lowering the incoming population. In a small town little issues are neglected until they become a problem. Here in my community even pet overpopulation is a huge issue, so euthanasia rates are sky high. I volunteer at the local animal shelter almost daily, there I find myself cleaning cages and treating sick animals to ensure they are cared for and not putting more strain on the shelter. Since this past summer I have been actively involved in 0ver 1000 spay/neuters, a monthly clinic funded through a Pet Smart grant allows a vet clinic in Lynwood to alter fifty cats per month for free. Which with a population in the county, majority being low income, the only solution to euthanasia and overpopulation is spay\neuter. Most are supportive to free services but each month people line up to have their cat altered 400 miles away because they just cannot afford it. I understand most choose not to give up a social life on the weekends to foster, place and alter cats but I choose to. I know that with each site I trap at, I make a difference. I just want the people to realize that they have the power to fix this problem if they take responsibility and let us spay and neuter, it is free so the service is typically appreciated. What I need help with is reaching out to more of those people in rural areas that I would not normally bump into so I can talk to them about this.

Plan of Action

My plan is to continue to work with PAWS, Grays Harbor Spay Neuter Project, and the Feral Cat Project to alter the animals and find appropriate homes for all of the adoptable cases. For the un-adoptable few we work to tame and overcome the minor issues that keep animals from adoption. I will continue to trap and release (TNR) every week replacing trapped cats altered being altered, which the city does not feel a burden from those animals that are altered and vaccinated.
