See It

Remember when you were little? You had recess where you could run all around, you had P.E., also known as physical education where you had sports like flag football and kickball, well imagine having nothing like that at your school. At my high school we have no required physical activity. Of course the days of recess are long over but you have to get up and moving sometime, and not just during the passing period from one class to another. In April of 2007 one of my teachers decided to do something about it. She organized a group of students to be on a committee for a Texas Action for Healthy Kids Grant. A month later we got word that we had received the grant and made plans to attend a conference in August in Austin, Texas where we learned all about what we could do with the two-thousand five hundred dollars. Once school was back in session the committee reassembled and we started planning activities. At the end of September we kicked off a school wide walking club, meeting two days a week, offering health examinations, and a great way to be healthy and have fun. Currently we are working on planning more fun activities in association with the walking club like dance lessons and social gatherings. Something we are really looking forward to is our school walk for diabetes that is set to happen in early December with an educational component in mid November. We hope these activities will spread the word on how important any type of physical education is and that is can be fun.
