The Problem

My project's goal was to help people in rural Mexico by teaching them basic English.

Plan of Action

I taught seven classes in Ziquitaro, Mexico. Among these were kindergarten, junior high, and a class for children who spoke English after having been deported or otherwise removed from the United States. I developed English instruction materials, as almost all my classes lacked English textbooks. I gave my classes an emphasis on conversation, anticipating that the most vital skill for an immigrant would be the ability to communicate. I verified my students' abilities with oral exams. They now have basic conversation, reading, and writing abilities. I think I also provided them with a realistic perspective on people, life, and the challenges they will face in the United States.
