The Problem
Ubud Indonesia is a small impoverished community surviving solely on travel and tourism. While here our group heard about Bali Global School. This is a school that teaches, feeds, and houses the poorest young men and women in the region. These young adults are hand picked based on need and goals to change and grow. Our group volunteered to teach them for a week about computers and technology, concepts of travel and tourism, sustainability, and English. The problem we're trying to address is poor education or lack of in these communities. By volunteering our time the students were able to interact with tourists, learn about recommendations, pollution and sustainable travel, and practice their English language skills.
Plan of Action
Upon arriving in Ubud we evaluated different areas of need in the community including animal welfare, education, environment, and poverty. We then looked for an opportunity to help in these areas. Selecting Bali Global School to volunteer at was great because we were able to educate the young people about an industry that can help them out of poverty, as well as how to be sustainable in the environment. After selecting Bali Global School we coordinated with the headmaster and started teaching. The students were so grateful for the time we spent with them. In return they taught us their native dances and songs. I believe they will use the lessons we taught them well such as being respectful and responsible to the environment and how to succeed in the travel and tourism industry.
