The Problem
The Good Wins Volunteers are committed to help area teens! Currently, 900 homeless teenagers live in Michigan and the number is growing. This is a service project we can offer to a financially struggling community that does not cost a dime but has rewards we could not buy. This project is more than just a collection of jeans, it is an opportunity to educate others about the growing problem and effects of poverty, especially in Michigan!
Plan of Action
The St. Johns vols began an informational campaign by placing stats about teen homelessness in e-mails, the newspaper, the school bulletin, and on fliers around the school. The vols posted fliers anywhere students pause long enough to read, which included bathroom stalls & urinals. The vols added to their awareness campaign by making eye catching collection boxes decorated with old denim and eye opening information about our seemingly invisible homeless teens.
This is the third year the St. Johns Good Wins Volunteers have participated in the campaign and have collected over 2,000 pair of jeans to date. We have committed to making this an ongoing service project by setting up our school as a collection site for jeans. The Good Wins Vols are also expanding the campaign, once again, and creating a “Tweens for Jeans” Drive and donating torn jeans to Operation: Quiet Comfort (quilts made of jean squares that are given to injured soldiers).
