Teen Green

the problem:

Teen Green is a group of students who envision and carry out projects to preserve the environment, with the help of Uncommon Good's infrastructure and supervision. It gives youth a leadership voice in the community, and teaches them fund raising, community organizing, the principals of environmental science and business skills. It also provides them with the essential leadership and community service experience that is essential today for a student to be competitive for college. Leadership of the group is provided by high school students, but younger students and their families, also participate as members.

why it's important:

Other goals that Teen Green has include the upkeep of an organic garden planted at a nearby elementary school and implementing a new trash free policy within local school cafeterias emphasizing the use of re-usable trays and silverware.

As a newly established youth group in the community of Claremont, Teen Green members are trying to raise awareness about the organization within the community, especially with other students. Members are working on designing a brochure to educate and excite other students about the group, and recruit more members, especially disadvantaged youth, to assist with the various projects.
Teen Green gives students a role to play in meeting the great environmental challenges that will determine the quality of their lives as adults. How their generation meets these challenges will determine whether the world is at war or at peace, whether our air, water and food is pure or poisoned, whether we experience devastating outbreaks of disease, and whether our low income communities continue to experience disasters such as Hurricane Katrina.

the plan of action:

The members of Teen Green are actively working on building a model environmentally friendly structure made of earth and biodegradable goods using a form of building called Superadobe developed by Nader Khalili. Fundraising efforts have begun for financing a larger structure, built in the same way, which can be utilized by student groups, community groups and for environmental education purposes. Both of these structures will serve as a model not only for members of Teen Green, but also members of the community at large. They represent the students' passion for the environment and their ability to have an impact on their community.

how you can get involved:

Examples of this type of sustainable building can be found at www.CalEarth.org.
