The Problem
This program’s goal is to raise awareness to teen drivers about the dangers of street racing. It will educate them on the possible consequences of reckless driving and also show them how easy it is to become involved in legal, organized racing. The evening is planned to feature speakers from an array of organizations. After learning of the dangers of street racing, the teens will be allowed to experience the safe and legal alternative by racing against each other with go-karts at the Miramar Speed Circuit, where the event will be hosted. After racing, presentations from local racing organizations will inform the teens of the accessibility to fun and safe racing.
Plan of Action
I have been working with a few other people to work out the details. Also, the biggest part is raising money to cover the costs. Sponsors are not easy to come by, so I have been calling companies and organizations for three months and will continue to do so until I raise enough money.
The program will be limited to 30 teenage drivers. The San Diego Juvenile traffic court will be asked to refer drivers for this program. The program is scheduled for February 21, 2011. A private room at the Miramar speed circuit will be used that allows speakers full use of multi-media equipment. The program schedule is shown below.
5:00 pm-5:30 pm : Teens arrive and meet in private room with food and drinks. Introduction by city council Carl DeMaio.
5:30 pm-6:15 pm : Presentations on street dangers by Ford Driving Skills for Life, Sheriffs Start Smart Program, and the California Highway Patrol
6:30 pm-7:00 pm : Practice sessions – 10 minutes long (10 teens each)
7:15 pm-8:00 pm : Presentations from local racing organizations (SDKA, SCCA San Diego Solo, Race Legal)
8:15 pm-8:50 pm : Trophy races – 10 minute race (10 teens each)
8:50pm-9:00pm:Trophy Presentation
Finally, I am getting a tv spot on KUSI and may even put the event in the newspaper to gather awareness.
