The Problem

We are trying to help local area kids who need extra help with their school work. Many families can't afford private tutoring; our group of teen tutors can help with this.

Plan of Action

1. Advertise (via flyers, word of mouth, web) that tutoring help is available. Club members are responsible for creating the flyers, creating a website, and spreading the word/distributing the flyers. 2. We've already figured out what times the group was available to provide tutoring; the next step will be to begin contacting the parents that express interest and set up appointments between tutors and tutees; drop-in sessions can also be arranged as we acquire more tutees/tutors. The library is a good location to have sessions. 3. Tutors will meet regularly to report on their experiences (what's working, what's not) and to discuss new ideas. So far we just have one elementary student officially signed up, but we expect many more as we get this program running (flyers have not actually been distributed yet). It is taking a little longer than anticipated because group members are very busy with school and extracurricular activities.

Project Updates

Once we got it organized (students submit their contact info and tutoring needs to an online form; a teen coordinator monitors this and matches students to tutors using another online-based spreadsheet containing the tutors' contact information and availability; tutors are given the students' info and appointments are set up), the program has really taken off. The teens are having to recruit more tutors from their schools (via honors programs like CSF and HISP) in order to keep up with the demand. The teens have also developed their own protocols for what to do when tutees don't show up (call to remind them/confirm appointments; tutors don't have to wait longer than 15 minutes if unable to reach tutee; after 3 no-shows student loses eligibility to receive tutoring). We've also started to put more flyers out in local elementary school offices (we're doing this slowly so that demand doesn't grow to fast).
