The Problem
There are hundreds of populations that are in need of help, both physically and emotionally. Especially in a time where school bullying is a prominent issue, many children are battling life-threatening diseases, and many children have incurable mental conditions, these children need a safe haven. When nothing else can be done to make them healthier, emotional healing is extremely beneficial, which is done through yoga. It gives children a place to release inhibitions, relax, and focus on their mental health. It really is a safe haven for children to resort to to get away from the struggles in their lives, whether that is medical care, family problems, or self-conflicts. TeenKula is here to raise money so we are able to provide that safe haven for needy children and teens.
Plan of Action
TeenKula was launched November of 2009. With guidance from my grandmother, mother (founder of Kula for Karma), and a small community of teens, we were able to create TeenKula. It started small with weekly meetings, and eventually, ,when we were able to obtain the resources and funds, we established our first fundraiser, which was an open mic night. We also had a walk-a-thon. Within the first year, we raised $15,000. This is TeenKula's second year with a projected goal of $50,000. Teens in TeenKula for Karma meet weekly to discuss ideas, public relations, and organize how fundraisers will be carried out. All of our money is put towards yoga classes for various challenged populations.
