the problem:
Being diagnosed with cancer is devastating, but it is even worse for kids who are diagnosed with less known cancer. When my cousin was diagnosed with Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare cancer in the soft tissue area, he went through many chemo and radiation treatments, including major surgeries. When conventional treatments did not work, his options were limited, receiving clinical trial treatments that were developed for more common type of cancer patients. Research for this type of cancer needs financial support so young patients will have more treatment options and improved life expectancy. My friends and I are "underdog supporter" of Rhabdomyosarcoma cancer research. As teens, we don't have means to financially support a research fund, but using our talent and organizational skills we found a way to raise significant amount of money to help the cancer research fund that needs attention.

My special cousin, Derek, battled with cancer for two years and I spent great deal amount of time with him while he went through many chemo treatments. During those difficult times, he has shown me and everyone around him unforgettable courage and strength. Though he did not win the battle against cancer, my friends and I would like to see others win the battle against cancer. So, in his memory, with the help of many dedicated friends, I have led an annual fundraiser event to raise money for the sole purpose of helping pediatric cancer patients. In the midst of sadness, the hope of wishing a better future for other young patients is very empowering to me and to many of my friends from various high schools.
the plan of action:
My friends and I are organizing the best variety show, performed by talented teens from different high schools.
We are planning to reach out to the media to get the words out. We are inviting more performers this year so 2010 Teen Variety Show will be the best one we have ever produced.
We are planning to train younger high school students (most of us are seniors) so they will be able to continue the fundraiser effort next year.
