The Town of Fountain Hills Mayor's Youth Council (MYC) would like to start 2008 Earth Day project where they develop a month long project of making Earth Day – Every Day of April. Begging the first week of April MYC will send a press release to the Fountain Times with a plea to residents to REDUCE their waste, energy use and consumption. The next weeks press release will plea to residents to REUSE and the week of Earth Day (the third week) will plea to residents to RECYCLE. They would also like to include an event called Movie in the Park where they show the BEE Movie and hand out stickers to kids. The stickers will say: REDUCE, RECYCLE and REUSE. They will also show a slide show of recycling tips on the screen prior to the start of the movie. Following the Movie event, they will plan to wear Recycle Shirts made from organic materials and sporting a large recycle sign every Friday of March. They also plan to hand out “Earth First” bracelets to their peers on Earth Day. We would like to ask “Do Something” for some additional funding to help support these various projects throughout April 2008. As your title stats “Do Something”, the MYC is hoping that by making many visible attempts at educating the residents about Going GREEN and being more responsible of the earth, they will inspire them to do something!
History: The MYC is a group of high school students who meet with our Mayor to discuss the issues affecting our town and its residents and chose projects that address some of those issues. Here is their mission statement:
It is the mission of the Fountain Hills Mayor's Youth Council to inspire students to take an active role in the community by helping to foster relationships within the Town, providing the necessary leadership opportunities that will best represent its function while maintaining the interests of future generations
They also participate in a number of community projects such as: Cell Phone Drive for a Domestic Women’s Shelter (they collected old/used cell phones), New Back Pack Drive for low income elementary school, Adopt a Street, Meals on Wheels, Earth Day and Arbor Day and many other activities where they volunteer their time.
