The Problem
As former middle school students, we all know how hard it is to make the transition from elementary school to middle school. For some this transition can be a very serious time where you make choices that could affect the rest of your life. Students who enter the sixth grade sometimes have social problems, hygiene problems, or are engaging in risky behavior. It could be said that these students participate in these activities because of a low self-esteem. There aren't any "transition" programs in our middle schools, and as a result kids continue on with their behaviors without much help.
Plan of Action
To get started, I first created a proposal to present to my Youth Advisory Team. In it I explained who the project would be for, why I wanted to do this project, and how we could do this project. After our Y.A.T. approved of this project, I contacted a former middle school teacher of mine and asked her if she wanted to participate in a after school program for at-risk students. She happily agreed to host the meetings and to find students who needed this program. We quickly got to work on what each meeting would entail and compared ideas. After we agreed on 21 projects, we began to organize each week's project. (We are still doing this!:-)) We hope to have the program started up on January 22, 2009 and are sure that it will impact the lives of our mentors, our students, and the lives that theirs touch. It can also affect the future generations, as we may help these students straighten out and better their generation as well as their future generations.
