The Problem

Many teens have more than they need. Others, in the same community, lack basic necessities. What do teens do with clothes that they no longer wear? As many pairs of jeans accumulate from those teens, homeless teens need them more than ever. Instead of throwing usable jeans away, why not give them to someone who will wear them?

Plan of Action

For two weeks, our club collected donations of used jeans during lunch. We spread the word of the campaign via the morning announcements, Facebook, mass texts, and fliers posted around school. When students and staff brought us jeans, they were also entered into a drawing for prizes. Each pair of jeans earned them an entry. The prizes included gift cards from Starbucks, Target, Jamba Juice, Borders, Cold Stone, The Spaghetti Factory, Baskin Robbins, and stainless steel water bottles and reusable lunch bags from Whole Foods. We used club money to purchase these prizes, using some of the club grant money from 2008. Each donater also signed our pair of jeans with fabric markers, which were not in a wearable condition. We also handed out candy and stickers. Our club was surprised at the outcome, because we didn't know that so many people would donate. At a home basketball game, we set up a donation table outside the entrance. Since people kept bringing in more and more donations, we extended the collecting a week longer than we had originally intended. It was a long and hard process transporting jeans around and finally getting them to our local Aeropostale store, but it was definitely worth it! Our grand total of 202 jeans will be given to local homeless teens. A 25% coupon for new jeans at Aeropostale is given out to everyone who donate, for every pair of jeans they donated. As we collected jeans, we filled in a goal poster with an outline of a pair of jeans. Our goal of 200 was fulfilled! Way to go, Mountain View!!
