Teens Living with Cancer Welcome Kits
the problem:
I am working with Melissa's Living Legacy also known as Teens Living with cancer. TLC was created by Lauren Spiker, a mother honoring the wishes of her daughter Melissa who lost her life to a rare form of bone marrow cancer at the age of 19. Her wish was to make a difference in the lives of teens with cancer. Between 15 and 20 teens are newly diagnosed with cancer in the Rochester, NY area each year.

0why it's important:
"TLC" provides age appropriate to teens diagnosed with cancer. "TLC" is currently starting a mentoring program matching a newly diagnosed teen with one that is in remission or closer to the end of treatment. My goal is to provide all newly diagnosed teens with a welcome kit full of items to help make treatment and hospital stays a little easier. Most important they will be a way for them to know that they are not alone and there is somewhere to go get support from someone who has experienced the same thing.
the plan of action:
My immediate goal is to provide enough welcome kits for one year. The intention kits will include a Teens Living with Cancer interactive CD, notebooks, pens, lip balm, journals, one time use cameras and supplies to make a no-sew blanket. I will also include a personal letter from myself as a survior diagnosed at age 15 with osteosarcoma, a form of bone cancer. "TLC" made a difference in my life and now I want to give back by providing support to newly diagnosed teens.
