Terp Movement Learn ◦ Act ◦ Change Terp Movement is a proposed week-long civic engagement event slated to take place in April 2009 at the University of Maryland. It will focus on identifying resources and raising awareness for human rights globally while unifying the university through student activism. While the week will educate students on an array of issues, the proceeds will benefit the crisis in Somalia. The week will begin with speakers and films educating students on global humanitarian crises. After learning, the focus of the week will shift to action. Students will be encouraged to share their opinions and partake in activism events held on campus. The end of the week is designed to raise money, through a large-scale benefit concert followed by a gala and golf tournament for alumni. A diverse team of student leaders will coordinate this ambitious event, exemplifying the power of people working together to create change. The Student Government Association (SGA), Student Entertainment Events (SEE), the Greek community and 100 student groups will collaborate for the first time ever to create an exciting new tradition on campus for a worthy cause. Terp Movement is not a radical idea; it is simply making activism accessible. Most Terps believe that social movements take place outside of campus, mainly in Washington D.C. They are understandably discouraged by the ensuing cost, travel time, and safety concerns. However, when activism events become accessible through a grass-roots movement on campus, those barriers are eliminated. This event will forge a bond between thousands of bright students, faculty and alumni with a goal of raising much-needed funds. As a testament to their hard work, participants will submit essays, poems and art for inclusion in an annual publication to be sold at the conclusion of the event.
