The Problem
We are frustrated by the amount of waste we see here in our school, as well as our landfills each day. We would like to reduce that amount of waste, while at the same time encouraging people to do their part and recycle. We would like to help educate the students and staff about how they can help us in this mission.
Plan of Action
Our school and club have instituted several plans to help our school Go Green over the years, such as sensors for our lights and recycling education. This year, we are hoping to promote the use of reusable sandwich and lunch bags, if not other types of waste-reducing items for the school. As a club, we have determined that the staff often brings in their own lunches, and a great deal of waste is generated in the teacher lounge and in classroom trash cans because of this. With a seed grant, we would like to educate the staff and students about many different ways they could Go Green by having them fill out (on our recycled scrap paper) one thing they currently do or plan to do to show they care about the environment. Each day during the month of Earth Day, we would like to give away things like reusable lunch containers and announce the winning teachers green ideas for the entire school to hear or see on the website we are building. We are calling it "Awesome Action April." We are also running a poster / poetry competition where students can voice their ideas about waste reduction, recycling, energy conservation and other environmental issues.
We have also worked with parent volunteers to speak with students and create posters displaying what can be recycled in our school recycle bins, which has increased participation in significant ways. Go green club has also posted reminders about recycling in all of the school hallways and team areas, and will have a DVD presentation playing for students while they eat in the cafeteria.
