The Problem

For the past year, As the Keep A Child Alive Chapter Leader at the University of Houston, my team and I have been on the mission of raising funds for anti-retroviral treatments for orphaned children in Africa. Keep a Child Alive is an urgent response to the AIDS pandemic ravaging our world, providing lifesaving HIV treatment and care to over 20,000 children and their families in Africa and India. Over the past year, 390,000 African children have died from AIDS. That's the equivalent of a child a minute. Think about that a moment. A child a minute. Someone's son or daughter. Someone's brother or sister. The hope, the dream of life snuffed out even before he or she had a chance to truly explore the world. I know most people will read that sentence, feel a little sad, and then go on with their lives. It's not our problem after all. And even if it were, what could we possibly do? You're just an average person, minding his or her business. Or maybe you don't consider yourself average, but you still don't see any solutions. But what I've come to realize while interacting with major players in the global health world is that those who make a difference are just like you and me. Of course, everyone has heard that a thousand times. What's hearing it one more time going to do? Can normal people like you and me come together and actually start something? And that, in essence, is what the Dreams Come True Campaign is all about.

Plan of Action

To carry out such a initiative involves thoroughly planning since it involves many areas that include promotions, financials, and manpower. One of the first steps we took was organizing a team that was in charge of handling all the particular logistics of each area. The second was recruiting different existing student college organizations to help promote the campaign. These individuals already have a following of students and could be better to reach out to more of the student body. Another goal was ascertaining city officials support such as local council members. Furthermore, creating events that include: Party for a Purpose: This event will occur the week of December 15-20, 2008 in which a wrist band will be sold for $20.00 to all Houstonians particularly college students. This wristband will give the public an all access pass to all Houston night club and venues. This week will use elements of entertainment and fun to communicate the Global Aids Threat affecting our society. The wristband will be sold by existing student organizations at University of Houston, Rice University, St. Thomas University, Texas Southern University, and Houston Community College. Dreams Come True: One Night of Fashion and Music Aids Benefit Concert: This concert will help raise additional awareness and funds not only around Houston college campuses but also the entire city of Houston. The Dreams Come True. The concert will involve the uses of visual and performing arts in expressing Aids awareness. The concert will take place on December 20, 2008 at then Aldine’s M.O. Campbell Stadium. Keep A Child Alive Black Card: This card will be a discount card that will involve all Houston businesses. The cards will give a total of 10% off any given sale or purchase of item to be donated to Keep A Child Alive and any chosen promotion or discount on any purchase order for the customer.
