The Problem

We have 6 counties located in middle Georgia - all classified as rural: Baldwin, Hancock, Jasper, Putnam, Washington and Wilkinson. We already know that the largest county, Baldwin, has the full support of both the county and city fire departments in acquiring Resuscitation Masks for pets who are the victims of smoke inhalation. We also know that Baldwin does not have any of these masks at this time. We also know there are 12 fire engines between both departments, thus we need 12 sets of Resuscitation Masks. We have a middle school program, the A-Team(Academics, Attitudes and Accomplishments) in each of our 6 counties and they are ready and eager to be a part of this project!

Why It's Important

We want to equip all the fire fighting vehicles within our 6-county region with Resuscitation Masks for pets. Each set of masks comes in different sizes to accomodate any air breathing animal species from a tiny bird to a St. Bernard. The cost for a set of 3 (small, medium, large) is $75.00. In equipping each and every fire-fighting vehicle with these masks we provide maximum coverage for the much-loved pets belonging to our families within the 6-county area. The members of our A-Teams will produce the statistics through research and meet with each of the Fire Department Chiefs within their counties. They will even go to City Council and/or County Commissioner meetings if warranted. We are working on the assumption that the remaining 5 Fire Departments will be enthusiastic about this project which will lead us to the next phase of publicizing our project and raising the necessary funding. Our A-Team members are all members of families and school communities. We can begin our "networking" right at home. . . we will prepare flyers for our families to share with their friends and co-workers. We can plan speaking opportunities at our churches, we can brainstorm ways to generate enthusiasm among classmates. While planning our strategies we won't forget to plan our victory celebration either!

The Plan Of Action

Step 1: an awareness of the need that was generated by our local Pet Therapy group, "Therapups". Step 2: recognizing the groundwork that has been done within Baldwin County - researching the fire departments, talking with the Fire Chiefs and talking about what the next steps should be. Step 3: prparing to involve our Baldwin County A-Team in planning for publicity and fund raising. Goal 1: Each of the 6 A-Teams will become familiar with both the need and the solution. Objective: a speaker from the Baldwin Therapup group will explain the project to representatives from each of the 6 A-Teams. Activity: An upcoming event for all 6 A-Teams will be utilized (October 2008) Objective: members of the A-Teams will be charged with sharing this information with their families. Activity: using index cards, members will make note of the What and the Why for easy referral for sharing. Activity: participants will survey their families for willing workers/volunteers and submit list to their A-Team Directors (Nov. 2008) Goal 2: Each county will design their Action Plan (November and December, 2008) Objective: researching the number of Resuscitation Masks needed within their county Activity: Meet with the Fire Chief and/or Head of Public Safety Objective: create a publicity campaign Activity: design a flyer that A-Team members and their families can utilize/distribute Activity: prepare a release for the newspaper Activity: design "collection centers" for both community and school Objective: Provide opportunities for families to become involved with the project. Activity: family members can distribute flyers at their workplace, at church, at meetings of community organizations. Objective: generate interest within the school community. Activity: enlist a teacher to work with the A-Team who can help in determining an effective way to reach other classes: *what is the project *who is it for *when will we fund-raise *where will the collection centers be and who will be responsible for them Activity: Implement "collection centers" within the schools Objective: Celebration! Activity: publicize the Success (pictures, stories, etc.) Activity: a party for the A-Team members Activity: Thank yous to everyone who helped in the successful outcome. Goal 3: Action Plan Implementation (December, 2008 and January, 2009) Objective: To raise the needed funds for the required number of Resuscitation Masks Activity: Community-wide publicity campaign kick-off Activity: Speaking engagements: *churches *community organizations *work places Activity: School campaign kick-off TIMELINE: *October, A-Team Engagement 2008 *October, Family/Parent Awareness November 2008 *November, Action Plan Implementation December 2008 *December,2008 "Collection Centers" activated January 2009 *February Celebrate and Thank Yous! 2009

How Can Others Get Involved?

Volunteer to work with the A-Teams in the 6 counties. . . primarily in the area of publicity: distributing flyers, telling their friends, neighbors, church members,co-workers and employers about the project. And, of course, they can make donations!!
