The Problem

As a freshman at State University of New York I became aware of a shocking, and dangerous reality that was taking place not only on my own campus, but more than likely a majority of campus's around the US. This problem is that of the Campus health center charging college students horrendously high prices for STD testing. With more than 15 million new std cases every year in the US, and 12 million of those are youth and young adults (including college students), STD testing is not a situation to profit off of! I have begun an initiative to persue a federal regulation stating that State Universities would be required to provide their students with free STD testing! Testing is TO IMPORTANT! We CAN NOT use this as a industry or capitalization opportunity! NO AMOUNT of money should ever be enough to risk the lives and the well being of our nations future! The Canton Initiative will directly impact, if it is successful, millions of college students across the country! It starts at the local level of my college campus and the current students, whether they be non-taditional, traditional, new, transfer, or what ever, they will all benefit from the fact taht this initiative will work to reduce and/or eliminate the STD epidemic on the campus, and the pandemic on campuses across the country! All will benefit from the fact that this initiative will work to reduce and/or eliminate the STD epidemic on the campus, and the pandemic on campuses across the country!

Plan of Action

It starts at the local level of my college campus and the current students, whether they be non-taditional, traditional, new, transfer, or what ever, they will all benefit! I began with research and collection of statistics ... then I presented my academic paper to my college professor and did a presentation in front of my colleages. Furthermore I am in contact with the American Civil Liberties Union for assistance and advice as to progressing and pursuing the initiative! The first step is to begin compiling STD statistics, as specific to college students, the charges coming out of college health centers! Second step would be to approach the SUNY system and attempt a internal resolution to the problem and set a precident for a State University providing FREE STD testing (this could include protests, petitions, etc...). Should this fail we would then be looking at the next step of approching a US Senator for assistance...in general the over all goal would be to take this to a federal and national level to provide all State University and College students the opportunity of free STD testing!
