The Problem
I voluntered with my churchs youth group at a homeless shelter. I got to see first hand the challenges that people face without food and clothing. I wanted to get people to understand that there are needy people right here in their community and that it's not just in 3rd world countries.
Plan of Action
I put out food totes, so that the food items would stay dry while at the pools. I put up flyers and had fellow lifeguards that were walking in one cities 4th of July parade pass out the same flyers to get the word out (I was suppose to pass them out with them but I broke my ankle and couldn't walk on crutches and a cast for 1 1/2 miles)
I also talked to children at the area libraries about the importance of proper nutrition and how it affects their bodies.
Each year one city has a watershow with it's lifeguards and the learn to swim kids. This year instead of charging $1.00 admission they decided to instead charge a can good for admission, they collected over 200 cans of food for the battle.
The battle culminated at "The Battle of the Pools" where area lifeguards compete in Silly Olympic Games to see which pool has stronger lifeguards. The winner was The City of Willowick-Manry Pool. But the real winners were the area food banks that had their very empty shelves filled with over 3/4 ton of food!
