The Problem
I have been going to Guatemala and Mexico for the past five years and the poverty level is horrific. Although we may think about Cancun or Guatemala City, the tourist cities of those two countries, what many people are not aware of is the rural areas of these countries. People in Guatemala as well as Mexico do not get clean water or even electricity. They are not aware of the health conditions and illnesses that exists, yet still live their lives suffering. With my church, we try our best to go to different churches and provide medical attention to the best of our abilities.
Plan of Action
Alongside my church, we gathered dentists, pharmacists, and acupuncturists who volunteered themselves to come to the Mexico and Guatemala trips. We had someone who fluently spoke Spanish to translate for us and we would go to different churches to help those who were sick. There were many people who had strange skin diseases, and we assumed that it was due to the bad water supply, and we gave skin creams and tried to disinfect their skin the best we could. We provided vitamins and painkillers for others who were in pain since we were not able to prescribe medications. Although we were only able to provide simple medication, many people were touched by the fact that people were taking care of them. Without my church having done what they had done, the people in Guatemala and Mexico would have been unaware of their symptoms and would have lived their lives just as they were.
