The Eco-Club at Lowcountry Day School
the problem:
I started an Eco-Club at my school. My goal was to make my peers aware of what was going on in the environment. On our school campus we have a pond. The club has begun cleaning the pond and the area around it. I wanted to create a place we could go outside to have class.

40why it's important:
It is important to me because school is where i spend most of my time. I want it to be as environmentally friendly as possible and a place our entire school community can be proud of. The Eco-club i started has clean-up days on saturday, parents, students, and teachers come and clean the pond, woods, and campus.
the plan of action:
My junior year i wrote a grant with the help of a teacher, Mrs. Gresham, I won 2,500 dollars from the Champions of the environment. With that money i have bought a water test kit, tools to clean the pond, and the campus. I have also bought picnic tables for the outdoor classroom. We tested the pond water and cleaned the pond. We removed debris and cut down dead trees. We cleared an area in the woods on campus that had decaying trees. We then put mulch and assembled picnic tables for the outdoor classroom. We are still cleaning and this month we are getting the algae out of the pond that the fish cannot eat. I also plan to buy fish that will help to create an even healthier pond.
