This past summer I was involved in a program at Furman University known as the Emerging Public Leaders. Only seventeen students from around the country were selected to go to be a part of EPL. Each student had to come up with a project in which they would help out their community. I choose to have Strom Thurmond High School's 1st Annual Carnival Extravaganza.
Organizing this event has taken much work and we are only half way there. With having a new administrator this year it was difficult trying to get this project underway at the beginning of the school year. However, as the school year has gone by the more and more the new principal is behind our effort. I was able to bring together a committee of students to help me out with the carnival and we have become known as the Carnival Crew. In December, we were able to raise approximately $200 from a Madden Tournament at our school. Since then we have been going to businesses in the community to try to get support and donations to help our efforts.
We will also be having STHS's very first Gong Show/Silent Auction. The profit that we make from this event will go towards the carnival. Another thing that we are doing is having each first period class at our school raise as much money as they can and the winner by March 4th will receive a pizza party.
The Carnival will be on May 23rd, 2009 at Strom Thurmond High School. This carnival will not just be something good for the school, but it will be good for the community.
