The Game Club

the problem:

Discover the power of non-traditional learning.
By including engaging activities outside of the curriculum and making critical thinking more accessible, exciting and fun we want our students to become engaged in the learning process and develop problem solving skills that will help them succeed after high school. The classroom is a community and as such needs to have applications to the greater community of Superior, WI. This project will help students succeed and have a vital role in creating lifelong learners. I am trying to establish a game library in our school.

why it's important:

Too often, students will return home from school to the confines of their home to play games over the internet or with a limited friend network at best. As a result social growth is slowed due to a lack of connection with students' peers. The Game Club is a place where a Superior Community is established and where fun ends the day.
Taking the time to organize new approaches to engage the students in critical thinking, livening up the curriculum with innovations instead of bookwork and creating a unique learning environment specifically for their benefit sends exactly the right message to students. Invest in them and they, in turn, will invest in themselves and the school community by staying in school.
This project is a way for our school to get our students actively engaged in thinking. This will be a never ending project. Year, after year, the games will be available for future middle school students to use.

the plan of action:

I will purchase many different board and card games that require critical thinking and problem solving skills for The Game Club, a new organization that will meet twice a week until it is determined that meeting every week is needed. I have brought a few games into the classroom and have had positive reactions from the students.
Now I would like to establish a game library for our school and start a board game club to meet after school where students can come and play games and have fun while strengthening critical thinking skills and problem solving skills.
As teachers, we try our best to create active learning environments in our classroom. I have discovered that using board games that require critical thinking and advanced problem solving skills helps our students internalize these skills and use them in becoming better students.

how you can get involved:

Others may help by donating games or money or volunteer to come and play games with the students.
