The Problem
During the Derby week there are numerous festivities, galas and other attractions, much of which are for adults only. While seeing this dilemma three years ago, I felt a void to the young adults and teenagers in my community. How could we have the largest sporting event in the world in our hometown and not have any event or activity for young adults and teenagers!
This issue prompted me to start my own business, BME Marketing, LLC. Through this business I would create, from conception to completion, a weekend of activities specifically geared toward the young adult and teenage audiences. I named the events, The Illumination Derby Ball and Events, the only high-profile group of events specifically geared to the young adult and teenage audiences.
Plan of Action
To make the events a success, I solicited national sponsorship from Verizon Wireless and regional and local sponsorships from over 15 companies. Three years later, this group of events has almost tripled in size and is receiving acclaim from not only Louisvillians, but also from some of the hundreds of thousands of people that visit Louisville for the Kentucky Derby.
