The Problem

Through the service project I started ('The Mission'), I help my Native American family and community on the Lac Courte Oreilles Chippewa Reservation in Stone Lake, WI. I raise money and collect school supplies to benefit the St. Francis Indian Church and School. The school runs solely on donations, so one can imagine the hard time they have keeping up (especially in this economy). I wanted to help out and make a difference, and this is when I pursued this project and put it in action!

Plan of Action

To execute my project, I did many things. I posted letters requesting donations in my church's weekly bulletin and sent out letters to family and friends asking for donations. I went to the local elementary schools and collected lightly used books to send back (I ended up sending over 200 pounds!). I also hosted bake sales. Most recently, I sold Native handmade goods from the St. Francis Gift Shop at a holiday boutique at my house. I sent all the money I made straight back to St. Francis and am very pleased to know it has been put to good use. Overall, I have managed to raise over $3,500 and am hoping to increase that number in the near future!
