The Problem

Many citizens of Western Kenya have no access to basic medical care or sanitation, leading to the unnecessary illnesses and deaths or hundreds of people per day. In the village of Chebukwa, Kenya, there is no doctor or clinic to treat local residents who are suffering from preventable diseases. Many orphaned children and vulnerable adults die from treatable disease such as malaria and tuberculosis on a daily basis. Therefore, The Nafula Foundation wishes to build a clinic in the village, focusing on sanitation, child and maternal health and infectious diseases. The clinic would be open several days a week and once on the weekend, with several different options for treatment including an urgent care and birthing area.

Why It's Important

I have lived in the Chebukwa area for over six months and have witnessed the deaths of many friends from preventable diseases. I co-founded The Nafula Foundation with a local Kenyan in response to the lack of basic infastructure in Western Kenya. For example, in this area testing for HIV/AIDS is unheard of, and many people are still using dangerous traditional medicines to treat their illnesses. Bringing health care to this area would save the lives of thousands of people who currently have no access to medical care.

The Plan Of Action

The Nafula Foundation wishes to build a medical clinic in the village of Chebukwa, Kenya. For $16,000, plus the cost of supplies, a clinic could be constructed. The structure would include a doctor's office, nursing room, injection room, waiting room, emergency/urgent care room, maternity area, office, restrooms, running water and electricity. All of this would be housed under one roof, and the price includes the cost of land. The Nafula Foundation would hire one doctor and two nurses to coordinate the clinic several days a week and once on the weekend. The structure would be constructed by international volunteers.

How Can Others Get Involved?

The Nafula Foundation currently accepts international volunteers to help with projects on-the-ground in Kenya. We also seek volunteers to help with fundraising initiatives and planning of projects.
