While our mission is the develop unity, cultural awareness, and a stable support line for women of the African Diaspora, we encourage diverse participation. Women of the African Diaspora have very low interaction on campus and graduate at a much slower rate than other groups. It is our purpose to remedy the issues that cause these two problems through self empowerment, sisterhood, community service, campus and community events, acceptance and activism.
Believe It
We have broken our approach to these issues into 4 components:
General Body Meetings- General Body meetings are designated cultural awareness through current and past event across the African Diaspora. We will address topics that are important to bridging ethnic and cultural gaps
Women Only Meetings- designated to discuss particular topics based on sisterhood. In 2008-2009 our topic is the “Seven Deadly Sins of Sisterhood” We will be having engaging conversation that will build bonds, create better understanding, and close gaps that afflict women
Ankh Study Sessions-The Nzinga Sisterhood Circle is a student organization and therefore academic excellence is a priority for all of us. The purpose of the ANKH Study Session is to enhance our member academic pursuits and also creating a network for study groups, note sharing and discussion for those in similar courses. The unique thing about ANKH is the cultural vibe that will be present.
Special Events- African Diaspora Culture Fair- Sep. 26th 2008- the cultural fair is geared towards uniting the African Diaspora through a strong representation of the various foods, dress, music, currents events, and guest speaker on the importance of acknowledging the African Diaspora
Women of the African Diaspora- Oct. 23rd 2008- a panel of women who attend ASU and represent the African Diaspora. The purpose of this event is to expose the African Diaspora present at Arizona State University.
Health Forum- Dec. 1- AIDS DAY- we will be doing free AIDS testing and hosting a forum on health care and issues. We will also be showing the film Yesterday, which details a woman’s emotional experience with AIDS, marriage, and life in South Africa
Nzinga AAMASU collaboration- Date TBA address to Black college and high school students on life after college and courtship etiquette in an education setting. The purpose of this event is to address the issue of gender relations in the community and the effect of Hip Hop on relationships
Community Service: Black women with college educations have a higher rate of abuse than those without. So we volunteer at the battered womens shelter. Self, and community pride starts at early age and so does the impression of higher education. We assist the local Girls 2 Women group with mentoring. We also participate in the Breast Cancer walk and AIDS awareness outreach.
Build It
Thus far, we have contributed to mending the broken ties between women and people of the African Diaspora at Arizona State University and our surrounding community. We are entering our second year and have already help innovative programming that exposed the cultural ties of the ASU community. We aspire to have higher retention of minority students and overall campus involvement and pride in higher education. The funds will go towards establishing our ANKH study sessions that will be held every week to assist students in networking, study skills and ensuring positive transition into post college environments. It has been proven that students who are active in campus organizations and who study in groups are better equipped to succeed in higher education and leadership positions.
