I'm helping the community of Overtown in Miami, Florida. The community suffers from Hypertension, Diabetes, and other Cardiovascular-relation diseases and complications. This issue exists because of poor dietary habits and little to no exercise. The Overtown Cookbook Project is targeted towards the community of (Overtown) because of lack of nutritional balance. Additionally, this project was set-up to promote the knowledge of dietary health and the benefits of applying the resources offered from our project. Our goal as a collaboration was to make dietary health a part of the way the residents in the community think. We wanted to make the people of the community cognizant of their health and if some of the residents were currently healthy we wanted to inform those residents on how to maintain their health. The Overtown Diet Project showed it true potential when it used the curiosity and efforts of the youth in the community. When the Overtown Diet Project was presented to the school of Booker T. Washington Senior High it was quite evident that the use of children was vital to the success of the Overtown Diet Project because they’re knowledgeable about the eating habits of their parents, their time schedules are flexible (which allows them ability to participate), they’re interested in the project and above all else their participation serves the entire purpose of this research project; which is to educate the residential community about healthy eating habits and this research will be more beneficial to the youth because when they begin to live on their own as adults they can incorporate this information into their culinary creations. Additionally, the Overtown Diet Project provided many experiences vital to academic enhancement in a student’s life. Finally, the children have strong influences on their parents in order to make them join us, in our community health revolution.
