The Phoenix Project is a student-motivated response to our world in crisis. It is an annual benefit dance concert, art auction, spoken word venue, and music performance coming together in one night of advocacy, talent, and humanitarian need. I created Phoenix Project in 2005 after the hurricane in Sri Lanka and I've continued to produce, direct, choreograph for, manage, and dance in the production. We're now a fifty-plus person organization of high school students from Dekalb School of the Arts who come together every December to create a production that will dance, sing, and speak into existence the need we feel to support human beings in need around the world. We've raised over $4,600 since Phoenix's inception, each year choosing a different beneficiary and a different global cause. In 2005 we raised money for the Red Cross's International Relief Fund to support Sri Lanka tsunami victims. In 2006 we raised money for the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to support research in the global fight against breast cancer. Our most recent production in the spring of 2007 raised money for the African Union through the Genocide Intervention Network in support of their effort to end the genocide in Sudan. Our 2008 partner is CARE, and our spring production will join them in the fight to eradicate global poverty by empowering women.
