The Problem
In South Dakota, there are not strong platforms for high school and college students to learn the craft of journalism. The media also in the state gets caught up in politics and crime and coverage of the arts and the people of the state is lost. We have created a media outlet that trains these aspiring journalists while cashing in on their passions. Our news Web site, allows young people to hone their writing and photography skills while covering topics that aren’t featured in mainstream media. We highlight local entertainment, businesses and people of the area as our volunteer contributors gain real journalistic experience. Knowing the fate of the newspaper industry, we decided to be only online. We understood to get young people interested in news, we had to communicate the way they do – with online and social media.
Plan of Action
Our plan of action is to use social media to interact with our readers and bring in potential readers and contributors. We plan to go into local high schools and colleges, which we’ve done some of already, and talk to students about journalism and how they can be involved. We’ve held one training session, but we plan to host a few more that teach specific skills and answer any questions our contributors may have. As we recruit more writers and they gain experience, we hope to tackle real, life-affecting issues and bring truths to our readers that they aren’t getting elsewhere. In order to do this, we need to be financially stable. We plan to be supported on advertising dollars, but we also are looking for grant opportunities and investments.
