The Saturday Brunch Program

the problem:

Homebound residents in Larimer County, primarily Ft. Collins, Colorado have limited access to nutritious food. The Saturday Brunch Program would deliver a nutritious meal on Saturday morning. Most of these homebound residents have no access to grocery shopping and are unable to prepare meals for themselves. This delivery provides a meal for the participants to eat on the weekend, increasing their caloric intake, nutrient status, and overall well-being and satisfaction with food.

why it's important:

As an almost college graduate with a degree in Food Science/Human nutrition and with a strong passion for service and advocacy work, I feel that it is highly important to recognize that many people in our community go without food because it simply isn’t accessible to them. Delivering an extra meal to these clients (free of charge) will increase their caloric intake and overall satisfaction with their lives. This program’s success will set a precedent in Larimer County and for Fort Collins Meals on Wheels. With the success of this program it will quickly become a sustainable program Fort Collins Meals on Wheels or other college students will be able to continue to coordinate. Without a successful pilot program funding will be difficult to find in the future.

the plan of action:

This project originally began as a research project for one of my classes, and turned into something I am quite passionate about and dedicated to. The most important first step and the most beneficial step has been to work with the director of Fort Collins Meals on Wheels (FCMOW). She has provided guidance and through her I have been able to make other connections to local businesses, such as a grocery store that is willing to provide a discounted price on muffins. This program will hopefully become a weekly supplement for the homebound residents in Ft. Collins.
