The Problem

In Vaalwater, a small town in South Africa, the outlook for most people is grim. One in every three people have HIV/AIDS and few people earn a living. There is an organization in Vaalwater called the Waterberg Welfare Society that supports the needs of people infected / affected by HIV/AIDS through which we help the orphans of Vaalwater.

Plan of Action

Harrison and I first worked on the structure of The South African Lacrosse Project. We wrote a mission statement, set up a website, and sent out emails and letters letting everyone know about the project and asking for donations and to forward the emails on to their contacts. Most, if not all, of our supporters that year stepped out to volunteer because of that letter. The three most important of whom were an attorney, a lacrosse player, and a store manager. The attorney offered to file our 501(c)3 status, the lacrosse player offered to coach, and the store manager offered to give us equipment at cost. The project continues to grow. This past spring, we were interviewed by WMAR, and that interview aired nationally during the halftime show of the JHU vs. UNC game. Inside Lacrosse Magazine wrote a wonderful article about the project in their August 2008 edition and USLacrosse magazine is about to release an editorial about the proect.

Project Updates

Kip and Harrison are meeting with local high school administrators to get other schools involved in the project. Keep your fingers crossed!

Also, watch for the latest issue of USLacrosse, featuring an editorial about the project.
