The Problem

This project was developed by high school juniors. The inspiration was Jerry Spinelli's novel entitled "Stargirl." Many individualistic middle school girls give up their creative spirit and conform due to peer pressure in 6th - 8th grade. High school mentors plan after school meetings focusing on peer pressure, relationships, bullying, the thin ideal, the impact of the media, and community service. Favorite activities include: The "Inner Beauty Pageant," Serious Discussions, "Star Women Interviews," The Stargirl High Ropes Retreat, and designing service learning projects. As high school mentors we are excellent role models and teach the value of individualism and provide strategies and support.

Plan of Action

As we start the new school year, we will plan activities and open the program to a new generation of creative middle school girls. We now have 16 high school leaders ranging from grades 9-12. Last year our program was funded by a one year grant. We would especially like to continue service learning projects and the high ropes course retreat. Our leadership will plan activities based on the interests and issues discussed at our first meeting in September. The Stargirl Society was awarde first place at the International Future Problem Solving Bowl and published in their "Community Problem Solving Book." It was highlighted in "Time Magazine for Kids and Publishers Weekely." The "Start a Stargirl Society Manual" has been sent to teachers and students in different states and countries.
