The Problem
Music can change lives. It is a universal language that allows people to connect to others and to themselves in a deeper way. In Provo, Utah, there are many talented musicians, but no outlet for them to play. Sure, if they are at Brigham Young University (the heart of the town), they can sign up for some classes that allow non-music majors, but what about those who aren't students? Furthermore, what about the many students at BYU who want to play in a small group, but can't sign up for the chamber music class because they either aren't a music major, or they don't room for another credit (a student must appeal to go over 18 credits in one sememster). How is it that Provo is possibly the biggest hot spot for weddings, yet there is no place to call to reserve a string quartet to play there. Why is it that no one plays chamber music in rest homes, community centers, benefits concerts, etc, when we have some of the top performers attending BYU, and outside of BYU, living right here in Provo? The Honors String and Honors Brass quintets only play once a semester--at their recital. Such excellent players should have the opportunity to perform and bring their talents and music to others, enlightening and lifting up their lives.
Plan of Action
I am going to get together with the clarinet studio professor at BYU who has experience in chamber groups and booking agencies. Also, I will need to promote it, getting enough people to start the organizations with at least 3 small ensembles. I'll have to ask musicians in and out of BYU to see how many people are interested.
The next step is finding a place to meet at least weekly. This is costly, considering we may have to rent a place. Then, we will need to create and relationship with local rest homes and charities and other places of that nature. Next, we need a performance venue for the benefits concerts. Renting a concert hall, or calling the city to allow us to perform at a park, weather permitting. As we gain a reputation, we will be able to contact schools, in hopes of visiting and giving lectures and connecting with students. We will need a president and vice president at least, to make sure there are people in charge of finances, booking, providing music, and other necessities. I am going to create a professional web page with the help of graphic designer Tannie Smith.
