The Problem
The Village Market is a new urban farmers' market hosted by the Osborne Village Cultural Centre in Winnipeg. It aims to provide fresh food resources from within a 100-mile diet range to community members while increasing the safety and use of a highly visible public space.
Plan of Action
The Village Market is beginning to set a precedent for urban farmers' markets in Winnipeg. It has overcome a municipal bylaw which would financially shut down non-profit community initiatives such as this through the assistance of the local councillors. Winnipeg is known as a very car-friendly city and creating neighbourhoods with more walkable amenities is a big step towards changing the car-culture. Manitoba also has an incredibly rich past and present agricultural connection and providing avenues for urban citizens to connect with this is key in creating more sustainable cities.
