The Problem
Yua is located in Northern Ghana, just south of the Burkina Faso border in the Upper East Region. Yua is part of the seven distinct communities that comprise the Eastern Corridor of the Kassana-Nankana District.Approximately 3,500 people live in Yua Ghana and do not have adequate access to water and sanitation facilities. This has contributed to the existence of preventable disease, sickness, and death in this community. The high child mortality rate in this area can partly be attributed to waterborne diseases that come from dirty water.
Plan of Action
In July of 2007 a group of four NAU students and a professor traveled to Yua for a site assessment study. During this trip we established the communities needs and solidified our commitment to the community which will last for at least the next five years. In May of 2008 we arrived in Yua for the first Implementation of our project. During this trip we created a water plaza for the town, sponsored a bore hole to be put by the health clinic, and installed solar lighting in the junior high school. In the following years we want to implement a drip irrigation system, a rain catchment system, a more extensive solar power system, clean toilet systems, among many other various projects.
