The Problem
The Thea Bowman House is an organization in Utica, NY that helps low-income families. It not only provides them with free monthly meals, It provides clothing and day-care services, where my sister and I have had the amazing opportunity to volunteer our time and work with some of the incredible children.
The first time I visited the Thea Bowman House I received a tour of all of the different facilities it offers. When I walked into basement and saw a wall of empty shelves that was supposed to feed the people inour community and possibly some of the children I’d worked with, my heart ached for them. My sister and I both knew that we had to do something to make this right.
So, with the help of our church and religious education classes, we set up a food drive. I gave a speech and asked for the help of our parish to donate food and money to help the hungry of our community. After the first speech I gave, one man came up to me who was visiting our church for the weekend, and handed me one hundred dollars. I knew at that moment I was making a difference. Overall, we raised $700 and filled 30 big boxes with food. I was able to fill the shelves of the Thea Bowman House and the stomachs of the less fortunate in my community.
