The Problem
Theatre of the Oppressed is an interactive, physical and playful tool used to investigate situations in which we are denied our basic human rights, personally and collectively. We use theatre to educate audiences and brainstorm on stage with the "spect-actors" about discrimination faced by NYC's homeless, prisoners, high school students, public school teachers, and immigrants, among others. We provide the tools to make the plays; the community actors and participants provide the stories from their lives, the situations they wish to change. Therefore, Theatre of the Oppressed NYC is able to facilitate change around a multitude of issues in NYC!
Plan of Action
Theatre of the Oppressed NYC works with local communities including the homeless, immigrants, prisoners, teenagers and teachers to establish "popular theatre troupes" all over New York City. These ensembles create and tour original, interactive plays inspired by real-life struggles, in order to engage peers in theatrical problem-solving and incite transformative action.
