The Problem
Chronic respiratory disease, lung cancer, heart disease, and even damage to the brain, nerves, liver, or kidneys are all effects of air pollution. Because of Los Angeles' record of being the most polluted city in the country, children here face fivefold greater risks of reduced lung function compared with children who live in less-polluted areas. The residents of Los Angeles face a larger number of environmental problems than any other city in America.
Plan of Action
The Things Green Learning Center is an interactive learning center that provides a calm and fun place to learn about the importance of saving water, using energy efficiently and decreasing pollution. The Learning Center model is an easily adoptable concept that can be copied anywhere in the country. A showroom that provides indoor and outdoor Eco-friendly living ideas is the main focus of the Learning Center. The showroom will included the six major energy/water consuming rooms of a house, also a to-scale model of the outside of a house, along with a “living” backyard which includes live grass and plants all contained inside of a naturally climate controlled building. A presentation room will also be utilized to so volunteers can give lectures on the importance of going green, as well as a question and answer segment.
A short movie will follow the presentation that further explains what:
• Organic
• Going Green,
• Environmentally Friendly
• Carbon Footprint
• Energy Star
The movie will also show examples of innovative products that help to promote a better environment. As well as ideas that are easily implemented that make big differences such as starting a recycling program at an apartment unit. (No more than 40 percent of those living in multifamily dwellings have access to a residential recycling opportunity.)
