The Problem

The early melting of ice is reducing the time the polar bears have to store up fats to survive the winter, less places for the polar bears to live, hunt, and harder time raising their young. We are trying to educate the average person who has limited knowledge of polar bears adn the challenges they face. The number of polar bears are declining and they have been included on the threatened species list by the U.S. Department of the Interior

Plan of Action

1. School Outreach a. High school bulletin board - R&M Sept 24 b. Announcement in daily announcememts- S - Nov c. Lunch Money Collection to adopt a polar bear - flyer R Nov 1 d. School newspaper article - S e. Informational Power Point for school and club website Jeanie- Shea – Margy Dec 15 f. F. Make and sell jean purses for little ones and let them stamp a bear paw on it! Margy – Sept 25 2. Local Community a. Distribution of books funded by the Fayette County Education Foundation written by club members – place a Polar Bear Info Flyer inside (DONE) b. Fall Festival Booth (Polar Bears Fishing under the ice Game) All 3 Oct 28 c. Local Newspaper Article S d. Float for the Christmas Parade R – set up committee – Oct 1 – Parade 1st week of Dec 3. Regional Outreach A. Help sale and promote recycled aluminum jewelry at the Memphis Zoo Harvest Festival – provide informational flyers – wear new t-shits– make large polar bear display to draw attention – M – next Wednesday a. Book distribution in all public,private schools and libraries in three county area b. Book signings – include Polar Bear Information -Done c. Commercial Appeal, Jabberblabber, etc. – article d. Contact Channel 5 e. Volunteer at the Memphis Zoo for the Polar Bear Cart, etc. 4. National Outreach a. Make a page about polar bears on club web site complete with questions and surveys – games, info, etc. (include Memphis Zoo and Polar Bear International Information) Shea b. Promote project on our EarthDay Network Page on the web c Enter project in Igniting Creative Energy Contest/ Sea World Environmental Excellence Award - Shea 5. International Outreach a.
