The Problem
In the summer of 2009, I traveled to Nepal to volunteer at an orphanage. I was immediately struck by the vicariousness and resiliency of the young children I encountered. Many of these children had been rescued from dire situations, having endured extreme hardship and emotional trauma. Yet the walls of the Nepal Orphans Home I visited were filled with laughter, chatter, and a deep sense of caring.
I left Nepal with a conviction that I wanted to give more. While these children have found a safe haven, there are countless more who are suffering. Public awareness and motivation to help are necessary for change. The project I am embarking on has two main goals:
• To raise public awareness of human trafficking and slavery through a documentary focusing on the stories of the Nepal Orphans Home children.
• To raise funds from the documentary to support the building of a new Nepal Orphans Home, enabling the children to have improved living conditions and education, as well as providing the infrastructure to support more children in need.
I believe this dual approach is necessary to gain a wide audience. By providing a specific cause within the larger scope of modern day slavery, viewers will be able to see that they can make a direct impact, encouraging them to continue to fight human trafficking.
Plan of Action
I am currently looking for funding for the documentary, and planning with Nepal Orphans Home. I am returning to Nepal this July to film the documentary, and then will edit at home in the US. I am hoping to promote this film, and use it to fundraise for a new NOH campus.
