The Problem
Project PEAR (PrimaDonna’s Empowered to Achieve Results) is trying to protect the girls of Wayne County from the dangers of premarital sex and early pregnancy through a county-wide campaign entitled, "Tickled Pink for Abstinence". We want to make our girls (and parents) aware of the high teen pregnancy rates in our county and encourage them to wait, which is the only fool-proof method to prevent unwanted pregnancies and STD's. North Carolina is number 9 in the US for the highest teen pregnancy rates and our county, Wayne, is number 21. We have got to do better! Knowledge is truly powerful, so I feel that the more informed our girls are about this issue, the harder they will try to abstain until they are mentally, physically and emotionally ready to engage in sexual activity.
Plan of Action
Our plan of action is as follows:
Oct. 22nd- Invite all our members to join our club on DoSomething.org and begin spreading the word about our new campaign
Get all local officials (mayor, city/county manager, board of education, commissioners, etc.) involved in our campaign including the police departments, sheriff department, Wayne County Health Department, school principals and teachers and other community organizations.
Oct. 25th- Contact local churches, businesses and organizations to ask if they would like to participate in our Hygiene Kit Drive Collection
Oct. 29th- Meet with Project PEAR members/volunteers to begin distributing marketing materials about our project and upcoming events
Nov. 1st- Set up “Tickled Pink for Abstinence” Hygiene Kit Drive Collection Tubs at each participating collection site
Nov. 13th- Host Pink, Black and White Tea Party (informative session) for community girls and their parents to attend.
Nov. 15th-Dec. 15th- (Every Monday) We will start our Girls Circle afterschool sessions on positive body image, self-esteem and self-sufficiency.
Nov. 20th-Host 1st Service-Learning event
Dec. 4th- Strut for Abstinence Fashion Show (Hygiene Kit Giveaway!)
Dec. 11th-2nd Service-Learning event
Dec. 15th-Last day of “Tickled Pink for Abstinence Campaign” (Sign-off party for girls)
This project will touch at least 100 girls, but will make an entire county aware of the issues of teen pregnancy. We will have a lasting impact on Wayne County through our many efforts and hopefully, jumpstart other projects similar to ours in the near future!
