The Problem
The problem that this annual, volunteer mission trip is trying to solve is one of poverty becoming a burden on one's everyday life. We've gone into destitute villages and neighborhoods in Tijuana, Mexico, to help rebuild families' homes, orphanages, churches, etc. We've tried to make life easier for these people so that they're able to provide for their families in easier ways. These families and people we met were living in the most terrible conditions, and they were barely getting by to feed and shelter their families. We went into Tijuana with a mission to serve people with everything we have; we wanted to give whatever we could to make their lives just even a little better.
We also engaged in personal relationships with these people in an effort to bring about a companionship with our fellow human beings. We all live on the same planet, and this fact should encourage us to give our lives to making others better off.
Plan of Action
In preparation for the trip, our group of missionaries got together, months in advanced, in order to practice and prepare for our work in Tijuana. We met to do everything from put together skits for children, human videos for adults, clean and rebuild ovens for orphanages, and even practice Spanish. We even put on a Pie Auction to raise money for the volunteers who possibly couldn't afford to go on the trip; at the 2009 Pie Auction we raised 6,450 dollars. The meetings before the trip not only allowed us to do our job better, but it also brought the group of volunteers closer together.
The impact that was made in Tijuana was intended to change the lives of the people we were going in to serve. However, the lives of the volunteers were impacted as well, if not more. It's important for people, especially young people, to understand that the world doesn't revolve around them. I would encourage everyone, if they're able, to become involved in some type of community service or mission trip because it opens up your mind to a whole other world of unselfish thoughts and capabilities.
