The Problem
I am trying to decrease the number of children that dropout of high school because they are unable to read. There are over three hundred thousand children a year that dropout in the United States and over five percent of the children live in either low-income or homeless families. These children do no deserve to have a disadvantage in school because they do not have the tools to learn. Today’s Readers Future Leaders work directly with the community centers and homeless shelters to increase the number of children in low-income areas who read a book every night before they go to sleep.
Plan of Action
I plan to work directly with the community centers and homeless shelters to set up libraries and learning centers throughout low-income areas so the children can find access to the books and school supplies they need to succeed. To start this program, I reached out to my community by newspaper and radio and informed reading advocates of my program. I gave them centers where they can donate the books and school supplies by placing them in the marked boxes throughout town. I also contacted the public library where I volunteer and informed the employee of my program and they were glad to donate slightly used books that were previously owned by the library. Today’s Readers Future Leaders has already made an impact in Hampton Roads by giving 2,500 books to children in over 8 community centers and homeless shelters.
